I first came to know Barney when I saw interviewing to become a Labo Intern. Our relationship grew stronger during the years that I was a Labo staff based in Tokyo. I appreciate every second I spent with Barney and will hold those memories dear to my heart. Barney was a true friend and counselor. Even now in Tokyo, I feel a huge emptiness for my special friend thousands of miles away! But as Mr. Yamada so kindly stated, Barney would want us all to continue and NEVER give up! We owe it to Barney! Gamabarimashou!

I first met Barney fourteen years ago. We were both kidney patients and were attending a support group at the Northwest Kidney Center. There are certain people who possess such integrity and intelligence that they cannot escape notice. Barney was such a person. Though our paths carried us in different directions, and we had less and less contact, I have always remembered him with great fondness. We enjoyed talking about politics and health care issues and those conversations were always enlightening. It is with great sadness that I envision a world without his commitment and concern. To Barney's family, may you find comfort in the words of all of us who were fortunate indeed to have encountered this fine young man.

Barney was one of the first persons I met when I began work with the Labo program. I was initially impressed by his knowledge and soft manner. It was evident that his heart was dedicated to international youth exchange. Through the years, Barney was an invaluable link in my work with high school exchanges. He assumed the role of phone counselor with teenage Japanese students experiencing attitude/culture adjustments. The students truly respected Barney's advice, resulting in a positive year-long experience for the Japanese students and the host families. 4-H Japanese exchange has lost a true friend. May God provide comfort to Barney's family with reassurance that Barney's life truly made a difference in global peace and understanding.

Missing You

Today the sun is shining,
but rain falls from my face.
Although my lips are smiling,
the pain I can't erase.

There are so many memories,
of the good times that we had.
But knowing they are all I have
will surely make me sad.

Not knowing when tomorrow comes,
if I can picture you.
Trying hard not to forget,
the memories so few.

So now I long for yesterday,
turning back the hands of time.
When you were standing next to me
your life was here with mine.

I was a Volunteer State Coordinator of the Month Long Japanes Exchange Program. I met Barney at the Exchange Coordinator's Conference. He is undoubtedly one of the most kind, gentle and soft spoken men I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He was always there to help in any way he could. I know he is the type of person who will surely sit with God. My heart goes out to those who remain here in sorrow for the loss. May this poem touch your heart:
May God Bless and heal your aching heart. June Heath
