- Barney was the perfect ambassador and gentleman for two cultures...he was
at ease in both.
He skillfully guided many through airports, languages, customs, bathroom procedures
and ettiquette, rules and regulations -- all for our comfort.
He overcame his health obstacles to make many significant contributions to
the success of international exchanges.
He leaves a rich legacy for us to follow!
Once more --Thank you, Barney.

- Though I never personally met Barney, the lives of my children, as those
of many many more, have been changed, enhanced forever, because of the great
work he has done and the way he has perfomed it. It has been apparent from
the beginning of our involvement with the Labo Japanese Exchange Program that
a great power for good has been at work here. May it continue to color the
fabric of the program.
Our condolences to Barney»s family and close friends. The hearts of many of
us weep with you today.

- I met Barney-san in 1984 at the Labo International Foundation in Tokyo,
Japan. He talked to us very gently and taught us many things about English
and US culture. When I first visited US, he was a chaperone staff. He talked
to us about Oregon state where I had visited and he was from, I remember that
he was proud of his home town. After I became a Labo staff member, I'd wanted
to be a chaperone like Barney-san. For 22 years, he worked hard for the Labo
Exchange Program and he helped more than 30.000, Japanese and North America
youth, and helped their eyes to a new world. Barney-san gave us many friends
and many experiences.
I'll never forget Barney-san. I miss you and say, "ARIGATOU (Thank you)" forever.

- although i didnt get to spend huge amounts of time with barney, the time
i did spend was always enjoyable. he possessed qualities that you will find
in the rest of his family; a generous spirit, a kind heart, and a gracious
human being. he will be missed.

- I met Barney in 1982 as a 4-H exchangee to Japan. He was taking care of
the 4-Hers in Tokyo until we met our host families. He had a kind a gentle
spirit. His inspirational advice at the beginning of our adventure made all
the difference.
Later, as a member of the 1st Intern Program, he was an ever-present source
of guidance and encouragement during the year we spent in Japan. I will always
have great memories of him.
After fighting illness for such a long time, I pray that he will rest in peace
and his spirit will soar. I send my deepest sympathy and prayers to his family.
